Homework
Homework at The Deanery CE Academy
We believe that learning doesn't stop at the classroom door; regular, meaningful out-of-hours study is vital for academic excellence and personal growth.
Rationale and Importance
At The Deanery, we view homework as an essential component of the curriculum. The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) suggests that effective homework can provide an average of five months' additional progress at the secondary level.
Beyond the data, homework serves to:
- Consolidate Learning: Reinforcing knowledge gained during lessons to move it into long-term memory.
- Develop Independence: Building the "learning muscles" of self-discipline, time management, and resilience.
- Prepare for Success: Establishing the study habits necessary for GCSEs, A-Levels, and future careers.
The Nature of Homework
We utilise a blended approach to ensure students develop a wide range of academic skills.
Digital Platforms: To provide instant feedback and adaptive learning, we regularly set tasks via platforms such as Sparx, Tassomai, and Seneca.
Traditional Tasks: Students will also be set paper-based tasks, extended writing, retrieval practice, and creative project-based work to broaden their engagement with subjects.
Rewards and Recognition
We believe in celebrating diligence and commitment. Students who consistently complete their homework to a high standard will be rewarded with House Points. These contribute to individual rewards as well as the overall House standings, fostering a sense of healthy competition and pride in one’s work.
Sanctions and Accountability
To ensure fairness and maintain high standards across the school, completion of homework is non-negotiable.
- Missed Homework: If a student fails to submit homework or completes it to an unsatisfactory standard, a C3 After-School Detention will be issued.
- Persistent failure: If a student persistently fails to meet deadlines, the sanction will escalate to a C4 After-School Detention. This allows for a more formal intervention to support the student in getting back on track.
Support for Students
The school provides facilities such as the library and supervised homework clubs for students who may not have a quiet space to work at home or who require access to technology. We encourage any student struggling with a specific task to speak with their subject teacher before the deadline.
